There’s no single right age to start nursery — but there are signs that tell you a child is ready, and signs that suggest they need a little more time. At ME Montessori Nursery Aylesbury, we welcome children from 12 months, and we’ve supported hundreds of families through the transition. Here’s what we’ve learned about readiness at different ages.
Starting Nursery at 12–18 Months
This is the age parents tend to worry about most, and understandably so. A one-year-old can’t tell you what happened at nursery, can’t ask for what they need, and can’t explain how they’re feeling. Everything depends on the quality of the setting and the key person relationship.
Signs a young toddler may be ready: they show interest in other children, they can tolerate brief separations from their primary carer without prolonged distress, and they are physically healthy and settling into a reasonably predictable routine at home.
What matters most at this age isn’t the child — it’s the nursery. The key questions to ask: What is your key person system? How do you communicate with parents daily? How do you manage the transition period? Starting Nursery at 2 Years Old
By two, children are developing language rapidly, showing clear preferences, and beginning to navigate social interaction with peers. Many two-year-olds are genuinely ready for the stimulation and social environment a good nursery provides.
Signs of readiness: they notice and are interested in other children, they can follow simple instructions, they’re developing some capacity to wait and take turns, and separation anxiety — while normal — doesn’t persist for the entire session.
Two-year-olds benefit enormously from the Montessori environment because it’s designed around their natural drive for independence. At this age, children want to do things themselves — pour their own water, put on their own shoes, choose their own activity. A well-prepared Montessori environment channels this drive rather than frustrating it.
Starting Nursery at 3 Years Old
Three is the age at which children become eligible for the government’s funded childcare hours, and for many families it’s the natural starting point. By three, most children have enough language to communicate their needs, enough social awareness to manage group settings, and enough independence to navigate a full day with confidence.
At three, the priority shifts from attachment security to learning environment. A three-year-old who is socially ready needs a setting that challenges them intellectually — one that doesn’t underestimate their capacity for concentration, problem-solving, and genuine learning. This is exactly what the Montessori method is designed to provide.
The Most Important Question
The question isn’t really “what age is right?” It’s “what does this particular child need, and does this setting provide it?” Every child is different. What matters is that the nursery you choose is genuinely attentive to your child as an individual — not just to the age group.
